Mission

The mission of the David L. Brown Youth Center is to redirect the behaviors and attitudes of troubled youth. This mission is accomplished through an intense program of education, behavioral modification, and positive reinforcement. The philosophy combined with the efforts of dedicated professional staff is designed to create an effective, valuable learning process for those youth who experience this program.

Scope

The David L. Brown Youth Center is a 24-hour Community Residential treatment program operated under the direction of the Miami County Juvenile Court. The Center, formerly known as the Miami County Youth Center, has been in operation since March of 1987.

Population

The David L. Brown Youth Center serves adjudicated, unruly / delinquent males between 12 and 17 years of age. The Center has the capacity to treat 21 residents. Residents are involved in the program for an average of 6 to 8 months placement period.

Education

The educational needs of the residents are met by an on site classroom. The educational goal of the program is to improve each resident's pattern of school attendance, classroom behavior, and acedmic progress. There is a maximum of 21 students in the classroom and supervision is provided by a full-time teacher and teacher-assistants.

Treatment

The treatment program is based on Reality Therapy (a no-excuses approach). Residents are expected to take responsibility for their own behavior and their own lives. Family and individual therapy, provided by a full-time licensed therapist, are an integral part of the treatment program. Parents are actively involved in therapy and activities.

Medical

The residents' medical needs are met by the Youth Center's attending physician. The physician provides services weekly on-grounds and on an on-call emergency basis.

Referrals

The David L. Brown Youth Center currently serves Miami, Darke, Shelby, Champaign, Montgomery, Preble, Logan and Clark counties. Referrals are made through the local juvenile courts. Inquiries about the program or referrals can be made to:
